Bringing home a new Mini Goldendoodle, Mini Bernedoodle, or Micro Bernedoodle is a joyful experience. At Mountain Meadow Puppies, we’ve raised family-friendly Doodles since 2014 in the scenic Cabinet Mountains of Montana. To make your puppy’s transition to your home as smooth as possible, we’ve created a detailed checklist tailored for first time puppy owners.

This guide will walk you through how to prepare your home, what to buy, and how to set up your space for your new Doodle puppy.

Puppy Proofing Your Space

Doodles are curious and intelligent. That makes it especially important to make your home a safe place before your puppy arrives.

Steps to Puppy Proof

  • Hide or secure electrical cords and charging cables
  • Remove or elevate plants that may be toxic to dogs
  • Store cleaning products in latched cabinets
  • Pick up small items like coins, rubber bands, and toys that pose a choking hazard
  • Use baby gates to block off unsafe or restricted areas

You can also explore our Puppy Headstart Kit in the shop for helpful starter items.

Setting Up a Safe Sleeping Area

Your Doodle puppy needs a calm and cozy space to rest and sleep. Creating a consistent sleeping area will help with crate training and nighttime routines.

What You Will Need

  • A crate that is appropriately sized for a growing puppy
  • A soft pad or blanket inside the crate
  • A snuggle buddy toy to ease the transition
  • A quiet area away from high traffic parts of your home

Crate training helps with housebreaking and offers your puppy a sense of safety and structure.

Creating a Feeding Area

Puppies benefit from consistency. Setting up a feeding station keeps things clean and helps with routine building.

Feeding Essentials

  • Stainless steel or ceramic food and water bowls
  • A non-slip mat to catch spills
  • High quality puppy food (ask us what your puppy is currently eating)
  • Easy access to fresh water throughout the day

Training treats are also important. Our shop includes options like Soft and Chewy Meaty Bites that are perfect for rewarding good behavior.

Stocking Up on Toys and Chews

Doodle puppies go through a teething phase and love to chew. Offering safe toys can help redirect unwanted chewing.

Recommended Toys

  • Plush toys for comfort and play
  • Chew toys for teething relief
  • Puzzle toys for mental stimulation

Make sure the toys you choose are made with safe materials and appropriately sized for your puppy.

Preparing for Potty Training

Most of our puppies start early potty training here in Montana. Continuing that routine at home sets your puppy up for success.

Potty Training Supplies

  • Puppy pads or an outdoor potty area
  • Crate for housebreaking
  • Bells on the door to help signal potty time
  • Enzymatic cleaner for accidents

Consistency and praise go a long way during the first few weeks.

Getting Grooming Tools Ready

Mini and Micro Doodles inherit their coat type from the Poodle, which means low shedding but regular grooming needs.

Basic Grooming Supplies

  • A slicker brush and metal comb
  • Puppy safe shampoo and conditioner
  • Nail clippers or a nail grinder
  • Dog safe ear cleaner

Starting a grooming routine early helps your puppy get comfortable with the process and reduces coat tangles.

Planning for the Ride Home

Whether you are picking up your puppy in person or coordinating delivery, you will want to make the first ride home calm and safe.

Travel Tips

  • Use a crate or pet-safe seatbelt harness
  • Bring towels, potty pads, and paper towels
  • Keep the car ride low stress and quiet

Having a few treats on hand and a soft blanket can also help your puppy feel more at ease during the ride.

Final Checklist Before Bringing Your Puppy Home

  • Crate and cozy bedding
  • Puppy food and feeding bowls
  • Collar and leash
  • Chew toys and training treats
  • Puppy pads and potty supplies
  • Grooming tools and shampoo
  • Emergency vet contact information
  • Mountain Meadow Puppies puppy starter guide
